The NSA announced that they are moving towards quantum resistant algorithms. What do they know?
We know Shor's algorithm is one of the easiest quantum algorithms to implement, and that major forms of modern cryptography (RSA, elliptic curve, etc) will be broken.
Microsoft has been moving towards creating a TLS with practical quantum cryptography, which they demonstrated with only 21% overhead.
How close are we? There is no disagreement that the post-quantum era is soon - IBM, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, NSA, Intel, Google, Honeywell, Alibaba and more are jumping into funding all angles of quantum information, and the breakthroughs are coming often.
